Dr. Chotima Böttcher

Dr. Chotima Böttcher is a research group leader in Experimental Neurology and Clinical Neuroimmunology at the Experimental and Clinical Research Center (ECRC), Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin. After completing her PhD in pharmacy at Martin-Luther-University Halle-Wittenberg, she joined Charité in 2006, where she established her work in systems immunology in neuroscience. Her research focuses on the transition from health to disease, investigating how neuroinflammation is shaped by systemic factors such as lifestyle, nutrition, microbiome, and metabolism. Her group studies neuropsychiatric and neuroinflammatory conditions including depression, stress, multiple sclerosis, and Alzheimer’s disease. Combining multi-omics approaches—immune profiling, proteomics, metabolomics, lipidomics, and neuroimaging—with machine learning, her team develops multimodal biomarkers for early diagnosis, disease monitoring, and treatment prediction.

Maciej Chmara

Maciej Chmara is a designer, researcher, and educator based in Berlin, and co-founder of the conceptual design studio Chmara.Rosinke. His practice operates at the intersection of culinary culture, social space, and speculative design. He is a member of the Junge Akademie at the Leopoldina and initiator of the transdisciplinary research group AG Miam Miam, exploring food through the lenses of science, philosophy, and art. His current research project Neuro-Cooking investigates cooking as a cultural technique of embodied cognition, linking food preparation, mental health, and the human microbiome. Combining methods from speculative design, neuroscience, and microbiology, he develops experimental tools—including EEG-based wearables—to study how sensory engagement with food shapes cognitive and emotional states. He has taught at institutions including UdK Berlin and HGK Basel and represented Austria at the London Design Biennale 2023.
